About the Art and the Artist.

This altarpiece was created during the COVID-19 pandemic and is a reflection on renewal and birth. German views the creation of altars as a spiritual act, with each found object adding its own history. Here the artist combines mirrors with artificial flowers, fruits, birds, and snakes, which often symbolize transformation because of their shedding skin. In the center is a figure that alludes to stereotypical iconography of Black women, which German reclaims as a symbol of power.
